Glee is Foxes new hit TV series about a high school show choir. The show was created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan.
In 2005, Brennan first wrote a screenplay as his intention was to try and make a film about a show choir. Murphy and Falchuk suggested to Brennan that he turn it into a television series. The script was then rewritten and formatted for TV.
The Glee pilot aired on Fox in May 2009, immediately following American Idol. The series began in September, 2009.
The show won the 2010 Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series in the Musical or Comedy Category. Lea Michelle, James Morrison and Jane Lynch, three of the cast members, received additional Golden Globe Nominations. The show also was given a Peabody Award which recognizes the most outstanding achievements in electronic media including television, cable and radio.
The show is set in the fictional town of Lima, Ohio. Ryan Murphy grew up in the Midwest and was himself in a show choir (a group of people who sing and, move or dance while singing), during his high school years. The show is based on his own teenage experiences.
Murphy is quoted as saying that his intention in writing about his show choir experience was to provide the public with a form of escapism. He wants it to be a family show, popular with both adults and kids. This is the reason that both teenage and adult characters have been developed in the series.
The characters of the TV series sing various cover songs in the musical segments. Characters do not spontaneously break into song. Each musical segment is presented as a performance which is cleverly integrated into each episode's plot. Many musicians, composers and performers, have graciously contributed their music to the show, including Billy Joel, Madonna, and Rihanna.
Glee will be releasing a series of albums of music from the show. In fact, the first was released in November 2009. More albums are scheduled to be released through Columbia Records in the near future.
The show currently airs on Fox Broadcasting at 9 PM (EST)on Tuesday evening. The current season will wind up during the middle of June.
